Counseling

Balancing the requirements of the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) program with the challenges of off-campus life could potentially burden students and their families with undo stress. If students need help, NWC faculty and staff can provide professional and personal counseling. Short-term counseling is also available through the Naval Station’s support network, as well as at the Newport Hospital.

About Student Counseling

While resident students may seek personal and professional counseling from faculty advisors or the Dean of Students, who keep an open-door, “drop in any time” policy, it is often their faculty seminar moderators who are their first stop.

Faculty moderators meet students regularly during classroom sessions and scheduled tutorials and, as they are more familiar with the students, are often best able to identify those with academic or personal problems.

If necessary, short-term counseling is also available through the Naval Station’s Fleet and Family Support Center, mental health department at the Navy Medical Clinic, as well as the Social Work Department at the Newport Hospital.

Distance Students

NWC College of Distance Education (CDE) students in all programs should contact their respective program managers, course division heads, or individual full-time and adjunct faculty for any academic or administrative questions or comments they may have.

For further assistance, the CDE Washington, D.C. office has a full-time faculty member and administrative assistant who are responsible for conducting counseling and oversight of their regional seminars.

The NWC at NPS Program Office has a full-time program manager and administrative support personnel who are available to all students enrolled in that program.

Also, at our Fleet Seminar Program locations there are liaison personnel who assist the students with any issues.
